Artist Marie Brozova's memoir of the public drawing in Horomerice.
To little town Horomerice near Prague, I was invited by an old enchanting man, Jiri Srajer,, who contacted me during public drawing in Prague Black Rose Passage.
He told me suggestive stories about his art lessons that he leads in his small village, about his effort to create a cultural program for busy mothers staying at home with their children, who cannot afford to undertake a pilgrimage to Prague full of cultural events. His agile enthusiasm was contagious.
Thanks to him I decided to experiment with carrying out my project not in a big city, but in a very little town, where people know one another and the information is spreading by word of mouth rather than media.
The mayor of Horomerice, Vaclav Kasek, willingly showed me the hall of the newly renovated municipal library and the atmosphere of the place was so welcoming, that I did not need any time to consider the offer. Local people were pleased to have something interesting happening and came to see my public drawing in large numbers. I was working on the drawing titled Wandering Circus and the planes over my head were landing at the Prague airport nearby. I was visited by many classes of school children who came to my make-shift atelier. I met with kindergarten tours as well as garduating teenagers.
One of these tours made a deep impact in my private mass observation. I was visited by a very active class with attentive children lead by a very efficient teacher. She was smiling all over and wanted to know all kinds of details about my work. She was very loud at singing her praises for my drawing skills.
In the afternoon some children from this class came back to tell
me, that this teacher slandered and discredited my work from A to Z at
the moment
they left, and made a great fuss over my plans: If she thinks,
that she will make an impression on the artistic world by creating the
biggest drawing
drawn by colored pencils registered in the Guinness Book of Record, she
is awfully mistaken.
The children wanted me to know, that they liked my drawings in spite of their teacher’s angry criticism, and brought me beautiful drawings they created with forbidden pencils they are not allowed to use during their art lessons. I was glad I did not have to explain to them that I was not trying to make an impression on the artistic world.
They understood that my greatest pleasure is that my public drawing brings encouragement to people enjoying all kinds of artistic creativity.
