Artist Marie Brozova’s memoir of the public drawing event in Pilsen.
Cold and damp November drove public drawing project The Defense of Colored Pencils under the roof. It was a great relief for me, I did not have to watch the clouds and wait for the first raindrops falling on my drawing. Every project must have dry as well as damp variation prepared, but in fact, when the weather is changing like the face of a local fool, you often feel like the dog and cat in Capek´s well known children book, when they tried to dry the laundry in rainy weather and never succeeded.
The research Library of Plzen Region provided me much more than the roof over my head. The library staff led by the deputy head Ms. Ivana Horakova created the most convenient conditions for my creative work, and gave my project appropriate publicity in Plzen including TV and radio.
Library visitors are propably the most sensitive audience of my project. Their imagination is very developed by constant reading. When you open a book, you imagine much more than it is written in words. I see books like the gateways to the world of imagination, and even for me books are a very important source of inspiration. That was the reason why I decided with pleasure to create a drawing titled "The Book of Life".
I needed many days to draw in detail the hollow tree – the home and office of the little wise man of fortune, who writes down the stories of our lives into the books lying all around him. "It needs cataloging," smiled the energetic Ms. Horakova, every time she was passing me by. She always noticed many new books waiting to be put into a system.
The atmosphere of this public drawing was very motivating. All the visitors who came back brought something individual into this drawing. In the afternoon there were crowds of people curious about the new details. They often lost their notion of time, sometimes even the notion of space. I remember two sisters, the identical twins, who stood beside each other but did not know it, and discussed the Book of Life with me. Not sooner than about five minutes they glanced at each other and could not believe their eyes.
